With what has been learnt of the disorder in recent years, the intelligence of an autistic child is rarely ever in question these days, especially with their savant skills. What you may doubt are their social and emotional developments, and their ability to communicate to others.

Several genetic disorders have symptoms that parallel or even surpass autism in occurrence and prognosis. One such is the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, another is the fragile X syndrome, and a third is Cornelia de Lange syndrome. These are chiefly different than autism because they usually involve the child hurting themselves. Whereas this is something that you might find in autism, it is not altogether an MO.

Child abuse and emotional stress can cause a child to withdraw from the rest of the world and choose to remain by themselves by and by. There is no reason to suppose that such a child is suffering from autism unless a doctor says so.
